What's happening this May/June 2025

Updated: 2 hours ago

May and June are bursting into life with flowers, insects, vegetables and summer events.

Did you know that Lewisham has some extremely rare Bumble Bees?

The rare Brown-banded carder and the Shrill carder have both been found in our incredible borough. No Mo May and World Bee Day are linked. In April and May the queen Shrill carder Bee emerges from hibernation and builds nests out of grass and plant fibres on the ground, or slightly underneath it. In each nest the reigning queen rears her workers in wax cells, who subsequently rear the young on pollen and nectar. By leaving nature we encourage the habitats to help protect these rare bees.

Our friends over at the Bumblebee Conservation Trust are running an ID course in Fordham Park on Tuesday 27th May. Please see below for more details.

🌼 Interested in pollinators? Curious about citizen science? Join us for a free Volunteer Taster Session in Fordham Park to learn how to identify common bumblebee species and take part in a guided Bee Walk survey!

This session is free, but booking is essential as places are limited. Booking via Eventbrite

What to Grow in May and June

There's always time to get into sowing a seed and growing a plant or your own food. Whether it's on a window sile, community garden, allotment or garden.

Courgettes, Marrows and Pumpkins can be still sown outdoors in early June. Brassicas such as calabrese, turnips and Kohl Rabi can be sown now for an autumn crop. You can also plant out your celeriac and celery early this month. If you have a small space you can sow some carrot seeds in a pot or grow some herbs on a window sill.
