"Lives can be transformed for the better when we grow food together in our communities, but this can be difficult if there’s no land available to use. Lewisham has pockets of unused land around the borough. They cost money to maintain and give nothing to the community. But it doesn’t have to be like this, The Right to Grow is a way to match residents to parcels of land that can be transformed into food and wildlife havens.

Growing your own food has so many benefits.  Bringing people and communities together, reducing loneliness, providing free healthy food and supporting the environment (by reducing the pollution from transporting food around the country and from abroad).  It makes cities greener which makes them cooler in summer, supports our mental and physical health as well as connecting people with nature.  In terms of eating home grown fruit and vegetables, it reduces the micro plastics, chemicals, and preservatives going into our bodies and is much fresher, nutritious and tasty too.

Passing a Right to Grow motion requires the council to provide a free, accessible map of all the public land that is suitable for cultivation or wildlife projects. It would make it straight forward for community groups to be granted a free lease without all the red tape. The Right to grow has already been passed in different parts of the country, including Southwark, who allow social housing residents to grow in the estates land near their homes."

Can we get a Right to Grow for Lewisham? If you want to get involved with mapping the borough, we have an online tool that helps you find your local area and go out and find those potential growing spaces.
