The launch of Lewisham's Food Justice Action Plan took place on the morning of 26th April at Lewisham Irish Centre.
Well done everyone for all your contributions! Lewisham Council Public Health Team, Lewisham Local, Good Food Lewisham and all the amazing food giving projects and community groups, you know who you are.
Creating this document has been a collaborative effort since June 2022. The next step is to build the Food Justice Alliance to work together on the actions in the plan.
The latest version of the FJAP can be found here: https://lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/socialcare/health/food-justice-action-plan
Thanks also to the caterers for providing lovely vegan food that everyone was complementing - from Abbotshall Healthy Lifestyle Centre https://abbotshallhlc.org.uk/cafe
And to Sustain for explaining where Lewisham fits in the recent Good Food For All Londoners report: https://www.sustainweb.org/good-food-for-all-londoners/
They especially emphasised the importance of the 'Cash First approach', which addresses the root causes of food insecurity and poverty, promoted by the Independent Food Aid Network and others, which is the focus of the Lewisham Worrying About Money leaflet that was collectively updated with local partners at the end of 2022.
We had some inspiring speeches from Public Health, Sustain, Evelyn Community Store (ex-Mayoresses), Rastafari Movement UK, Sydenham Community Supermarket and Lewisham Irish Centre / FoodCycle Lewisham.
We look forward to working together with people in the Food Justice Alliance and Good Food Lewisham.
